Egypt : October 2024
I like saying that I had to wait until I was forty-four before finally making the journey of my dreams: to the Nile Valley, its people, its timeless landscapes, and its ancient temples and tombs. I have always been drawn to this Egypt rather than the Red Sea coast, so often favoured by partisans of farniente and scuba diving. Why did I wait so long? Life, and all its twists of fate. Other projects seemed more pressing at the time. Yet I never gave up. And when I first arrived in Luxor, it was not so much a shock as the sublime confirmation that the land of the fellahs and the pharaohs had remained the great love of my youth. I feel at home there, whether in an oasis of the Faiyum or in the heart of Downtown Cairo. There is such a profound sense of memory in those magnificent ruins—from Kom Ombo to Abu Simbel, by way of the majestic Temple of Horus at Edfu. Filled with wonder and quiet gratitude, I find myself renewed as I contemplate the ochre hues of the Theban hills. I cannot wait to return, again and again.
My eternal gratitude to you, Coco, for sharing this trip with me. -FA
« May you spend millions of years, you who love Thebes, seated with your face turned toward the north wind, your eyes filled with joy. »
-FA
